Overview
A window that adapts to the house it belongs to.
A casement window is hinged at the side or the top and opens outwards, which is why it remains the most widely used window style in British homes. Its simplicity is its strength: proportions, glazing bars, hardware and colour can all be adjusted to suit the property.
Across the Cotswolds and the Thames Valley we work on everything from stone cottages and Victorian terraces to 1930s semis and recently built family homes. Casement windows are the range we most often specify because they can be tuned so precisely. On a period elevation we keep sightlines slender, add astragal bars where the original windows had them and choose a heritage colour that settles into the stonework. On a contemporary house we do the opposite: larger panes, fewer divisions and a crisp modern finish.
Every project begins with a free home survey. We measure each opening individually rather than working to a nominal size, check the condition of the reveals, lintels and sills, and talk through how each room is actually used. A north-facing bedroom that suffers with condensation needs a different conversation to a south-facing sitting room that overheats in July. That conversation shapes the specification, and it is set out in a fixed written quotation before you commit to anything.
Because casement windows are made to measure, awkward openings are rarely a problem. Deep reveals, arched heads, stepped cills and non-square openings in older properties are all handled at survey stage, so the finished window sits properly in the wall rather than being packed out to fit.

Styles and configurations.
Casement windows are built up from opening and fixed lights in whatever arrangement suits the opening. These are the configurations we specify most often.
Side-hung casement
The classic arrangement, hinged at the side and opening outwards. Handed left or right so the window opens away from prevailing wind or a neighbouring wall.
Top-hung vent
Hinged at the head and opening from the bottom. Ideal above a fixed light, or in bathrooms and kitchens where you want ventilation without a wide-open sash.
Fixed light
A non-opening pane, used where ventilation is already provided elsewhere. Fewer opening lights means more glass and a cleaner elevation.
Cottage and mock-sash
An unequal split with a smaller upper light, which reads convincingly as a traditional window on older Cotswold and Thames Valley elevations.
French casement
Two opening sashes meeting in the middle with no central mullion, giving an unobstructed view and the widest possible opening.
Bay and bow
Angled or curved runs of casements projecting from the elevation, adding floor space and light to a front room.
Astragal and Georgian bars
Applied or integral glazing bars in a range of widths and layouts, matched to the pattern of the original windows.
Egress and fire escape
Where a bedroom needs a means of escape, we specify the correct opening hardware and clear opening dimensions as part of the survey.

Colours and finishes.
Colour is where a replacement window either flatters the house or fights it. We bring samples to the survey and look at them against your brick, render or stone in daylight.
Classic white
Clean, bright and still the most requested finish. Works particularly well on rendered and painted elevations.
Heritage creams
Softer off-whites that sit comfortably against Cotswold stone and older brickwork without looking stark.
Greens and greys
Muted heritage greens and anthracite greys, understated on period homes and confident on contemporary ones.
Woodgrain foils
Convincing timber-look finishes with the grain and depth of painted or stained wood and none of the repainting.
Dual colour
One finish outside to suit the elevation, another inside to suit your interior. A common choice with a dark exterior and white internally.
Hardware to match
Handles, stays, hinges and locks specified in finishes chosen alongside the frame rather than as an afterthought.
Glass is chosen at the same time: obscure patterns for bathrooms, acoustic units on busier roads, solar control where a room overheats, and leaded or decorative detailing where the house calls for it.
