It sounds like a small distinction. On the elevation of a period house it is the difference between a window that looks right and one that very nearly does. Shadows fall evenly across a flush face, the frame reads as one uninterrupted line, and the eye is not drawn to a stepped edge running around every opening.

Timber-look options are a large part of the appeal. Woodgrain finishes carry the grain and depth of painted or stained wood, and paired with slim sightlines, a cottage split and the right heritage colour, the result is convincing at the distance a window is actually seen from. What you avoid is the cycle of sanding, filling and repainting that timber demands, along with the swelling, sticking and rot that comes with it.
