Double vs Triple Glazing
The big jump in performance is from single to double. Going from double to triple is a much smaller step, costs meaningfully more, and for noise problems is often the wrong solution entirely.

What each one is
A double glazed unit is two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity, usually filled with argon, with a low-emissivity coating on one internal face to reflect heat back into the room. A triple unit adds a third pane and a second cavity.
It sounds like a straightforward fifty per cent improvement. It is not, and understanding why is the whole of this page.
Diminishing returns
The great leap in window performance was single to double. Adding a second pane and a still-air cavity transformed heat loss, and everything since has been refinement.
A well-specified modern double glazed window achieves a whole-window U-value around 1.2 to 1.4 W/m²K. A good triple can reach roughly 0.8 to 1.0. That is a genuine improvement and worth having in the right circumstances — but it is a fraction of the improvement you already got from the second pane, for a proportionally larger increase in cost.
For context, Part L requires replacement windows in an existing dwelling to reach 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B. Decent double glazing already clears that bar. Triple is an optional upgrade, not a compliance requirement.
The noise question — read this bit
The most common reason people ask us about triple glazing is noise, and it is the reason triple glazing is least likely to help.
Sound reduction through glass is not about how many panes you have. It is governed by three things: the mass of the glass, the width of the cavity, and whether the panes are the same thickness as each other. Two panes of identical thickness resonate together at the same frequencies, which is exactly what you do not want. Standard triple units often use three equal panes in two narrow cavities, which can perform no better than a good double unit and occasionally slightly worse in the frequency range that traffic noise occupies.
What genuinely works is an asymmetric double unit — different glass thicknesses on each pane — with acoustic laminated glass on the outer leaf, where the interlayer damps vibration. That specification will beat a standard triple unit for noise, usually at less cost.
Weight and what it rules out
A triple unit is roughly half as heavy again as a double one. That extra mass has consequences that show up at the survey rather than in the brochure.
- Hinges and hardware have to be rated for it, and large opening sashes can reach the practical limit.
- Frames need to be deep enough to take the unit, which means a slightly bulkier section and a little less glass area.
- Some styles are harder to do well in triple, particularly sliding sash windows and large opening casements.
- Handling and installation are heavier work, which can matter on upper floors and awkward access.
Cost
Triple glazing typically adds a meaningful percentage to the price of a window, varying with size, frame system and glass specification.
The useful comparison is not triple versus double. It is triple versus what else that same money could buy — better low-emissivity coatings, argon fill, warm-edge spacer bars, a better frame system, or simply doing more windows in one go rather than half the house now and half later. In a house that still has an uninsulated loft or a draughty front door, the third pane is rarely the best next pound.
The condensation surprise
Triple glazed windows sometimes show condensation on the outside face of the outer pane on cold mornings. This alarms people who have just spent a lot of money.
It is not a fault. It happens precisely because the window is working: so little heat escapes through it that the outer pane stays cold enough for dew to form on it, exactly as it does on a car windscreen. It clears as the morning warms up. It is a sign of performance, but it is worth knowing about before it happens rather than afterwards.
When triple genuinely earns its place
- A very well insulated house. In a property with good wall and loft insulation and an airtight envelope, the windows become the dominant heat loss path and the third pane starts to matter.
- New build and deep retrofit to a low-energy standard. Where the whole fabric is being brought up together, triple is part of a coherent specification.
- Large north-facing glazing. A big window that never receives solar gain is a pure heat loss, and triple reduces it.
- Comfort at the glass. A warmer inner pane means less of that cold radiant feeling when you sit near a window, and less cold draught falling down the glass. On a room with a window seat or a desk by the window this is a real, felt benefit that a U-value figure understates.
What we usually recommend
For most replacement projects on existing homes across the area we cover, excellent double glazing — soft-coat low-E, argon-filled, warm-edge spacer, in a well-made frame and properly installed — is the right answer, and any budget beyond that is better spent on the specification of the glass than on a third pane.
Where the property is already thermally tight, or the brief is genuinely about noise, we will say so and specify accordingly. If noise is your problem, ask us about acoustic laminated units rather than triple.
