What Is an A-Rated Window?

A Window Energy Rating is a single letter summarising how a window balances heat lost against heat gained. It is a useful shorthand, but it is calculated on a standard reference window and it quietly rewards sunshine.

What the rating is

A Window Energy Rating is a letter, from A++ down to E, awarded to a window under a scheme operated by the British Fenestration Rating Council. It is the fenestration equivalent of the label on a fridge, and it exists to let homeowners compare products without needing to understand the physics underneath.

The letter is derived from an energy index, expressed in kilowatt hours per square metre per year, which represents the net energy balance of the window across a notional heating season. A window scoring zero or better is Band A. Ten or better is A+, twenty or better is A++. Band B sits just below zero, and the bands continue down to E.

What goes into it

Three measurements are combined, and it is worth knowing all three because they behave quite differently.

  • Thermal transmittance, the U-value. How much heat escapes through the whole window — frame, glass, spacer and all. Lower is better. This is the number the Building Regulations are written around.
  • Solar factor, the g-value. How much of the sun's energy the glass lets through as free heat. Higher means more solar gain. This one counts in the window's favour.
  • Air leakage. How much air passes through the closed window. Lower is better.

The index is a net figure: gains minus losses. That is the crucial thing to understand about the whole system, and it is the source of most of the confusion that follows.

Why the rating rewards sunshine

Because solar gain is counted as a benefit, a window can climb the bands by letting more sun in rather than by losing less heat. Two windows can carry the same letter while having quite different U-values, and a window with a slightly worse U-value can outrank one with a better U-value if its glass admits more solar energy.

In a south-facing room that is entirely reasonable. The window genuinely does deliver free warmth on bright days, and the rating is capturing something real.

On a north elevation it is not. A north-facing window receives very little direct sun, so the solar credit in its rating is largely theoretical while the heat loss is entirely real. The letter on the label does not know which way your wall faces. This is the single most useful thing to take away from this page: on north-facing windows, compare U-values rather than letters.

The reference window

Ratings are calculated on a standard reference window of a fixed size and configuration, so that every product is measured on the same basis. That is what makes comparison possible, and it is also what limits it.

Your actual windows will be different sizes, with different numbers of opening sashes and different ratios of frame to glass. A small window with two opening sashes has proportionally far more frame than the reference window and will perform less well than its rating implies. A large fixed pane will perform better. The letter is a comparison between products, not a prediction about your house.

What the regulations actually require

Part L of the Building Regulations sets the standard for replacement windows in an existing dwelling at a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m2K or better, or Window Energy Rating Band B. Replacement doors are held to 1.4 W/m2K.

So Band B is the compliance floor, not an aspiration. Band A and above are genuine upgrades on top of it. Any reputable installer will be meeting or exceeding the minimum as a matter of course, which means a claim of compliance is not in itself a selling point — it is the baseline everyone has to clear.

Where the letter is useful and where it is not

  • Useful for like-for-like comparison between two quotes for the same job, where both are quoting the same style of window in the same material.
  • Useful as a quick sanity check that a quote is not specifying something substandard.
  • Less useful across materials. A uPVC and an aluminium window can reach the same band by different routes, and the band tells you nothing about sightlines, longevity or finish.
  • Not useful for noise. The rating has no acoustic component whatsoever. A window can be A++ and do very little about the traffic outside.
  • Not useful for comfort at the glass. How cold it feels to sit next to a window is driven mostly by the inner pane temperature, which the band does not report.

What actually moves the number

If you want a better-performing window rather than simply a better letter, these are the specifications that do the work:

  • Soft-coat low-emissivity glass, which reflects long-wave heat back into the room while letting short-wave solar energy through.
  • Argon fill in the cavity, which conducts heat less readily than air.
  • A warm-edge spacer bar instead of an aluminium one. The perimeter of a sealed unit is a significant cold bridge, and a polymer or composite spacer reduces it markedly. It also cuts condensation at the glass edge.
  • Cavity width. For thermal purposes there is an optimum, usually around 16 to 20mm. Wider than that and convection inside the cavity starts to undo the benefit.
  • A well-designed frame. Multi-chambered uPVC sections or a proper polyamide thermal break in aluminium.
  • Installation. A high-performance window fitted with gaps around the frame is a low-performance window. None of this shows up in the rating.

A note on EPCs

Replacement windows do improve the Energy Performance Certificate rating of a house, but usually by less than homeowners expect, because an EPC assesses the whole dwelling and the windows are one element of a fabric that also includes walls, roof, floors and heating. If lifting an EPC band is the specific goal, it is worth looking at where the biggest losses actually are before committing the budget to glazing alone.

Where an elevation faces north, or where the brief is about noise or comfort rather than heating bills, we will talk about the U-value and the glass make-up rather than the letter, because that is where the difference is actually made.
