Bifold vs Sliding Doors

The real choice is between maximum opening and maximum view. Bifolds fold almost the whole wall away; sliding doors give you bigger panes and slimmer frames the rest of the year.

The honest starting point

Both are excellent products and we fit plenty of each. The decision usually comes down to a question people do not ask themselves often enough: in a typical British year, how many days will these doors actually be standing open?

If the answer is a good number, bifolds are hard to beat. If the honest answer is a handful of weekends, you will be looking through the doors far more than you look past them, and that points the other way.

Opening area

This is where bifolds win outright. The panels concertina and stack against one jamb, or split and stack to both sides, clearing roughly ninety per cent of the aperture. The wall genuinely disappears.

A sliding door works differently. Panels slide behind one another, so one panel's width always remains covered. A two-panel slider opens about half the aperture; a three-panel system running on two tracks opens around two-thirds. It is a generous opening, but it is never the whole wall.

How they look closed

This is where sliding doors win, and it is the factor most people underweight when they are stood in a showroom imagining summer.

A bifold needs a stile on both edges of every panel, so a four-panel set puts eight vertical frame members across your view, four of them doubled up where the panels meet. A three-panel slider across the same opening has far fewer interruptions and much larger areas of uninterrupted glass.

Because a sliding system carries bigger panes in less frame, it also lets in noticeably more daylight across the same hole in the wall.

Stacking space

Folded bifold panels have to go somewhere. They stack perpendicular to the opening, projecting into the room or out onto the terrace by roughly the depth of the panel width.

That matters more than it sounds. Furniture placement, a narrow patio, a path running along the house or a planted border can all make a stack awkward. Sliding panels stay within the plane of the opening and never project at all, which is often the deciding factor on a tight terrace.

Weather performance and thermal efficiency

Sliding systems generally have the edge here, for a structural reason. A lift-and-slide mechanism drops the panel down onto compression seals when you close it, which makes a very effective seal against wind and driving rain. A bifold relies on gaskets and brush seals across a larger number of meeting points.

On thermal performance the same logic applies: fewer frames and fewer junctions mean less heat loss, so a sliding door will typically post a slightly better whole-unit U-value than a bifold across the same opening. Both, properly specified in thermally broken aluminium, meet the Part L requirement of 1.4 W/m²K for replacement doors.

On a very exposed elevation facing the prevailing weather — which describes a lot of rear gardens on the Wiltshire downs — this difference is worth taking seriously.

Everyday use

  • Bifolds can include a traffic door — a single leaf that opens on its own like a normal door, so you are not folding the whole set back to let the dog out. If you choose bifolds, specify one.
  • Sliding doors are effortless to part-open. One panel, one push, no unfolding. For everyday ventilation this is simpler than a bifold.
  • Bifolds have more moving parts. More hinges, more rollers, more meeting stiles. They are reliable when well made and well installed, but there is more to keep adjusted over twenty years.
  • Panel weight on sliders is significant. Large sliding panes are heavy, which is exactly why lift-and-slide gear exists. Good hardware makes a heavy panel feel light; poor hardware does not.

Cost

At the sizes most homes need, the two are broadly comparable, with the balance shifting according to configuration. Bifolds tend to be competitive at middling widths. Sliding systems with very large panes get expensive, because the glass gets heavy, the hardware gets serious and installation becomes a bigger job.

Neither is the cheap option. If the budget will not stretch to either, French doors with side screens give a lot of glass for the money and should not be dismissed.

Aperture width matters

Below about 2.4 metres, bifolds start to look busy — you end up with narrow panels and a lot of frame in a small opening. At those widths French doors or a two-panel slider usually look better.

Above about 4 metres, both work well, and the decision returns to view versus opening. Very wide apertures may need a structural post or a larger beam, which is a survey question.

So which one

The short version, allowing that the survey and the elevation always have the final say.

  • Choose bifolds if the garden is genuinely an extension of the room, you entertain outdoors, the opening is wide, and there is clean space for the panels to stack.
  • Choose sliding if the view is the point, the elevation is exposed, the terrace is tight, or you want the largest possible panes and the slimmest possible frames.
  • Choose either and do not agonise — both are made in the same thermally broken aluminium, both carry our 20-year guarantee, and both will transform the room.

Before you decide

Stand in the room and look at where the panels would stack. Then step outside and look back at the elevation. Most people find the decision makes itself at that point, and it is a far better test than a brochure.
